Sorry, I did not completely explain this scenario:

I meant some pretty animated (and oh-so-helpful) sheet that comes
down containing the UI I described. The intention is that no spouse is
selected until the user chooses the 'source' and 'target' in this UI,
then commits to the action by clicking "Ok" or something.
Then, of course, the two people pop up out of the list, fly together
and cinnamon-red hearts explode all over the screen to demonstrate
that the two are madly, deeply ... linked by strong reference in a
data structure.
Incidentally, this gives new meaning to "retain/release" and an
ominous undertone to the concept of "retain cycles". Relationships
built on codependency can be a scary thing.
