If you are using a high-end Canon camera, you can use Canon's EDSDK
(which is what I use) for remote control. EDSDK actually uses the
Image Capture framework behind the scenes.
Other cameras have similar SDKs (of varying quality).

Control your camera directly from Image Capture, allowing you to take
pictures and download them in a single, convenient step. More camera
models from Canon and Nikon are now supported."
I had hoped it would do better than what you're describing.
I tried ImageKit, but it's a little too specifically geared toward
taking pictures of the user, and doesn't seem to allow me to select
which camera to use (it always uses the built-in iSight on my MBP).
