What you need is usually more or less dictated by your target market
in case your application is specialized.
Lots of good information about coding and marking can be found here: http://www.gs1.org/
If you get to pick your own symbology, make sure that your scanner is
able to read it (preferably out of the box). I know that some scanners
have to be reconfigured to read EAN codes for instance. Aim for the
most widely used code and consider your space constraints and the
amount of data you are going to encode. Perhaps you need to use matrix
codes like QR or DataMatrix?
