The Xcode macros only work in compiled files, though, right? I can't put __DATE__ into credits.html and expect it to do the substitution there, right?

__DATE__ is a special macro interpreted by the C preprocessor (not Xcode itself) so it only has an effect in C / Obj-C / C++ files.
