10.4 square button backgrounds go white when clicked

I have some square buttons along the top of a textured window. The window does not have an NSToolbar. These buttons have images (pngs) with transparent backgrounds on them. When I click on them on 10.5 they darken and look good. On 10.4 the backgrounds turn white and look bad. iTunes doesn't do this on 10.4 so I must have something set wrong in Interface Builder but I can't figure out what. Any ideas ?
