PopupButton in IB 3.1 ToolBar

I want a Pull Down PopupButton in my toolbar. I've added a one in IB and as long as the type is set as Pop Up (not a Pull Down) all is well. When I change it to Pull Down I see repeated errors in the console:

... and eventually my app crashes.

Any ideas?
