Building smart folder list as in iTunes

I would like to add a left pane (I don't know what to call this) as in
iTunes or Apple Mail.
In this pane, I want make place a library, folders, and smart folders.
Where should I start?
I couldn't find any example code or documentation regarding this.
Please someone help me how to do this.
