Transparent Background for a Progress Indicator (NSView)

Hi guys,

This is a quick question I hope! What's the most efficient way to make the progress indicator background transparent (I've got a screen shot of a quick test app[1])? Is there away to do this without redrawing the gradient in the background? I'm assuming that I could try and find out the dirty area if I need to...

Sorry in advance if I'm missing something, but your help will be greatly appreciated.
