Saving an annotated PDF to a flat image

Hi list,
I am trying to save a PDF annotated using subclasses of PDFAnnotation
to an image (such as a png, jpg etc) or a PDF such that the
annotations are displayed. So the resulting image should be annotated.
I have tried a couple of routes such as trying to draw the annotations
on an invisible PDFView subclass and then dumping the view's contents
with dataWithPDFInsideRect:, but it appears that unless the view is
actually drawn on screen then all you get is a white page. The PDFView
should not be visible on screen at the time of saving.
The annotations themselves do not need to be editable.
Any ideas?
Thanks.
