It is a known bug - Apple have not stated that it will be fixed for
10.6.
I am going to implement my own pthreads with a tcb block to go low-
level
on this problem, but would LOVE to be able to use Apples high-level
tools.

That said, I don't believe its really designed for high performance so
much as for ease of use.
But it might give you a starting point.
