The reason I said "not necessarily" is because in this area there has
been a lot of functionality change in this area due to UTI adoption.
Some things that would previously ignore UTIs or as a last-chance
effort reverted to old behavior have now stopped doing so once told
"there's a UTI involved."  I wouldn't be surprised if the code for
-typeFromFileExtension: hasn't been touched, and due to changes in its
dependencies now simply fails when told to get the extension of a type
that has an incomplete UTI spec.
