I would love to work a bit closer with the Core Foundation, but I am afraid it is going down the same drain as Carbon...

Why on Earth would you think this? Apple has been very clear what aspects of Carbon are deprecated, and CoreFoundation is in no danger whatsoever, particularly since major parts of Cocoa are implemented using it.
