Because it's good to be lazy. I'm not an iPhone developer, but I'm
willing to wager that the nib isn't actually loaded until the view
itself is requested, just like NSWindowController only loads its nib
in response to -window being called.
That's why we desktop folk have -awakeFromNib and -windowDidLoad, to
set up things on IBOutlet properties.
