Thanks for the reply. So the implementation of :
NSDate *date = [dateFormatter dateFromString:@"0 : 0"];

is something like:
return [[NSString alloc] init.... autorelease];

And as the autoreleasepool gets drained in every event loop, the NSDate
object was released?
