So, maybe Interface Builder sends _setMenuName:@"NSRecentDocumentsMenu" to the submenu of its "Open Recent" menu item.

Good work figuring it out, Jeff. I suppose that the NeXT engineers cooked up this kludge at the end of a long night at the end of a long day at the end of a long week. Or maybe their vacuum-tube-based hardware was limited to 16 outlets per object and adding one for the "recents" menu would have been 17 :))
