Now I would like to display an alert dialog.
Unfortunately, this does not work; it even seems it makes the
application hang
LSBackgroundOnly apps can connect to the window server, but can't
display a UI, IIRC.

I don't quite understand: what do you mean by that?
My background-only app has a regular window with title bar and buttons
and sliders in them ...
(Eventually, the window will be borderless and transparent.)
