Agreed. When I've downloaded some new app, I really, really don't want to have to first run some totally unknown custom program that is going to spray bits all over my disk. If something's going to spraypaint my disc, I want it to be Apple's installer, which I somewhat trust, and which has mechanisms to list what's going to happen.
