I just popped up a notification watcher and unplugged my external monitor, and saw lots of "CMDevice(Un)RegisteredNotification" distributed notifications go past.  There were also a bunch of "CMDisplayDeviceProfilesNotification" distnotes with the same userInfo dictionaries as the Device(Un)Registered notifications.

A quick search through the docs doesn't reveal those strings, though.
