So my questions:

Has anyone done this successfully (with UIScrollView)?
Is it better to re-implement all this with layers to have more control over everything?

Yes it is possible to do this with UIScrollView but only for a small amount of images. You eventually run out of memory on the device.

The best way accomplish this task would be to use CALayers which will allow you to unload images when memory gets tight.

Regards

Daryl
