If you're new to Cocoa, you might be a bit intimidated by Core Data.

To get an idea of what's necessary to use Core Data, read (and
re-read, and re-re-read) the Low Level Core Data Tutorial.  You can
bypass a lot of this stuff if you use the NSPersistentDocument
architecture, but since you want to add Core Data support to an
existing project, you will probably want to know what's going on.
