Well, it turns out (as was pointed out to me in an off-list message-- thanks again, Greg!) the "difficulty" was me severely over-thinking the issue, and getting off-track by setting up some Undo stuff outside of the method where it really belonged. Fixing that, and cracking open another bottle of Mt. Dew set me straight, and now I've nearly completed the entire task.
