Nathan,

thank you for the hint, with the documentation I managed to set up a Custom View with a NSSearchField.

If you are targeting 10.5+ you can put a view directly in a menu: <http://developer.apple.com/documentation/Cocoa/Conceptual/MenuList/Articles/ViewsInMenuItems.html >

Since I use RubyCocoa 10.5+ is my target, above does well.
