To which I reiterate my prior comment: For more than a year now,
Apple has been recommending the use of installer packages for all
deployments.
Apple is recommending installer packages instead of drag-and-drop
installation of app bundles? Since when? Can you point to any docs
about this?
The recommendation changed with the release of 10.5. I was surprised
and annoyed when someone pointed it out to me, not least because at
the time Apple had dueling recommendations in the documentation. Some
pages asserted that as of 10.5 installer packages were the way to go,
while other related pages had not been revised recently and so still
recommended the drag install when possible. The rationale was about
providing a consistent installation experience across all categories
of software for all levels of user, and supporting remote installs by
network admins.
That said, I'm having trouble finding any page today that contains
that recommendation. With any luck that means it's been retracted,
rather than that I'm just having trouble coming up with the correct
search terms.
