Custom button states?

Can someone explain if it is possible to use UIControlStateApplication for a UIButton to create a new custom button state in my UIButton subclass. It seems like this may be the way to do it, but there are no examples to be found and google results are few and far between. If its not the correct usage can some explain what UIControlStateApplication is used for?
