Any nice way to quit a background/helper app?

I would like my app to be able to quit its background helper. NSWorkspace and Process Manager methods seem to only find "applications (defined as things which can appear in the Dock that are not documents and are launched by the Finder or Dock)".

Is there a way to quit a background app, other than having NSTask send a unix 'kill' ?

Thank you,

Jerry Krinock
