I've created a custom view with 2 instances in the nib. We'll call them view1 and view2. I have a controller class that has the outlets for both views. I'd like to have a certain function in my controller class test to see if view1 is the first responder, and if not, to make it the first responder.
if (![[view1 window] firstResponder]
{
// Do something
}
How do I set a custom view to be the firstResponder?

I think the information you need is here:

http://developer.apple.com/documentation/Cocoa/Conceptual/EventOverview/EventHandlingBasics/chapter_4_section_6.html#/ /apple_ref/doc/uid/10000060i-CH5-SW2

It tells you what you need to do to make a view the first responder, and also what the view needs to do to support becoming the first responder.
