Yes, Core Image. But you should read Quincey's post, which I agree
with. Unless you have a very good reason to do otherwise, you should
just use the standard text truncation options.
One of the problems with ... is how useless it becomes when dealing
with truncating numbers (especially in table columns), or any text
when the available space is very limited such that only the first
character gets drawn. Using a fade can often get you another 2 or 3
useful characters drawn.
e.g 100, 123, 198 all truncate to 1...
I too have implemented a fading scheme similar to Oleg and also gave
up trying to accomplish the same thing over a background that was not
under the control of the text drawing code.
Another option is just to use a straight clip, instead of fade or
truncate. If you resize Mail's Size column you will see that this is
what it does.
