CFBundleTypeName

http://devworld.apple.com/ReleaseNotes/Cocoa/AppKit.html
"Use of these keys becomes optional: CFBundleTypeName"

http://developer.apple.com/documentation/MacOSX/Conceptual/BPRuntimeConfig/Articles/PListKeys.html
"This key is required"

What is the truth?

I'm trying to create a document by passing a type into makeDocumentWithContentsOfURL, but it doesn't seem to call the appropriate document handling class to create the document.
