Maybe it's a Snow Leopard thing? Have you tried with Leopard? Also, I notice the Apple tech note mentioned in the Ars article says to use "Mac OS Extended" -- did you use that rather than the default "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)"? If only I had one of those spiffy new MacBooks I'd love to try this myself.
