UIButton image disables "shows touch on highlight"?

Is it expected, normal, documented(?) that putting an image onto a UIButton turns OFF (in practice) the "shows touch on highlight" property?

For the life of me I cannot get this to work, neither in the simulator nor on the device.

Ideas/suggestions?
