If they are read-only, why not just filter the underlying string, replacing all occurrences of them with a zero-width space (0x200B), or potentially zero-width non joiner (0x200C) or zero-width joiner (0x200d) depending on how those character interact with the surrounding forms (either forcing or not forcing final/initial forms).
