In addition to your own post, there are a number of hits that make various recommendations of approaches and a few code examples from various Cocoa eras).

The answer may very well be "there doesn't seem to be anything that suits your own specific requirements". The point is not to bother thousands of people (the cocoa-dev list) with something you can google yourself.
