I was wondering if anyone could shed light on this strange error that occurs, sometimes, (never when I'm actually trying to reproduce it) when clicking in the application menu while running a modal Open Panel.

Are you really sure that's where it's crashing? Are you sure it's not crashing on another thread? I've never seen a run loop crash while awaiting an event before, though I guess it could happen.

Are you using the latest version of Mac OS X? Earlier versions had some interesting bugs in the 64-bit frameworks, most of which were fixed a while ago. FWIW, I'm running Xcode in 64-bit mode, and Xcode doesn't crash when I try clicking in the app menu with an open panel present. Does it happen when you try running your app as 32-bit (if possible)?
