What I want: a listout of items, each of which presents info and a number of controls. Typical example: Safari's downloads window.

You might like to check out Joar Wingfors' Subview-Tableview example. I believe it does almost exactly what you want:

There is also AMCollectionView from Andreas Mayer that is similar:

Both of these seem to address exactly what I want to do. On first glance I like AMCollectionView's API a bit better, but I will check both of them out.
