FastCGI is an extremely nasty protocol. I speak from experience here. FastCGI has mostly been abandoned in recent years because it's too intractable to work with and no one has been willing to fix the Apache module.

SCGI does exactly the same thing, but is a lot more approachable (and there's an Apache module for it, though it might not be pre-installed.)
