Incidentally, can anyone explain why this particular menu item is exalted?

Because it's the only way to enter certain characters. If I want to turn on certain ligatures or drop math symbols into a text field, I have to use the Special Characters panel. Why do you want to get rid of it?

Incidentally, I can just open it from the Language & Text menu extra. Or open in it another app and switch to yours. Removing the Special Characters menu item is not going to preclude the user from using the panel.
