the myNSWindow is NOT nil
when i try to set a breakpoint on setDocumentEdited, the "enabled"
check box shows "mixed" state, and the breakpoint is never hit. if i
try to set it to "on" it goes back to mixed state
[NSApp mainWindow] always returns nil, so i must use myNSWindow
still not working

Are you sure that myNSWindow isn't nil? I've a single window
application where I set the dot using something like:
[[NSApp mainWindow] setDocumentEdited: mod];
It works just fine.
