I am leaning towards iMacs, because these computers will serve as ambassadors as well as development machines; I want to double-check that if we have to go to Mac Minis, say with 4 GB of RAM, we won't be waiting forever to compile a simple program.

CPU speed isn't a problem unless you're building something enormous*. The limiting factor in most builds is disk I/O throughput. Getting a system with a 7200RPM disk will help more than getting a faster CPU or (beyond 2GB) more RAM. See whether the Apple store will let you custom- build a machine with a fast disk; if not, you can plug in an external drive with, ideally, a FW800 interface.

* and if CPU is an issue, you can enlist nearby Macs or Linux boxes for help by using Xcode's 'shared build' (aka distcc) feature._______________________________________________
