In what method of your controller is the mutable array created? I'm guessing that you're somehow getting there twice, causing the original array with its 9 elements to be replaced by a new empty array. You could check that easily by setting a breakpoint on the line that creates the array, and see if you get there twice.
If nothing in your code is clobbering the array, then I'd suspect the NSBrowser is doing something to its content. If so, I have no help to offer -- NSBrowser is one of a handful of nightmare object classes in the frameworks, and I'm still in therapy from the one time I tried to use it. :)
