This notification does not give me the actual menu, but I am now using it in combination with menuNeedsUpdate: the notification is sent before the menuNeedsUpdate message.

This seems to work fine and should be compatible with 10.5; it depends on the order of events, so using [NSMenu propertiesToUpdate]  as per Eric's suggestion from 10.6 on should do the trick.
