iPhone development without using the Xcode IDE

Hi all,
I have the question whether it is possible to develop iPhone Apps without the use of the Xcode IDE. For example you could use the classic unix development tools manually, instead of using them full automatic by pressing the "build and run" button.
It is just curiosity which brings me to this question. I don't want to abstain from Xcode and his functions.

Dominic D.
