In addition to Uli's solution, I have a class that specifically deals
with Finder labels, and works at least back to 10.4:

That class also has code for drawing a gradient that looks similar to
Finder's, and the FVColorMenuView class in that project has code for
a Finder label control that tries to duplicate Finder's (10.5 and later).
