NStoolbaritem and a custom view

For NSToolbarItem and a custom view, do you need to call the selector for the action or is that handled automatically? I think it's not handled automatically because I have to handle the mouse events to update the drawing so I assume by calling super, it won't invoke the action because I changed the view in the item. At least this is what I am observing. Someone please confirm.

Thanks,
