If you don't mind giving up some space in your browser window, the "ADC Search" Safari/Firefox extension by Sal Conigliaro is pretty nice:

It goes through Apple's own search page, which has gotten much, much better lately.  I didn't notice the improvements until I got some comments on my blog post:
