NSToolbar autovalidate

I have set all toolbar items and controls in my toolbar to autovalidate which as I understand the docs is that the items are validated by the toolbar.

I have 4 views in the window content. One view contains a table one view contains an outline the other two contain bitmap images I generate.

If I click the table or outline all tool bar items except those represented by some form of control disable and I do not understand why this happens.

Can you point me to a doc that tells me how to prevent this?
