Thanks guys! I didn't think to experiment with isFlipped since I thought there would be a way to make the cord algebra work (which would save me from having to do a backing store flip).
I'm a carbon guy transitioning a carbon-based codebase to all cocoa, so I'm sure you'll see my ugly mug again. :)
