I wrote an open-source Mac/iPhone networking framework that makes this job easier (both the Bonjour part and the protocol part):

The API lets you send messages, which are similar to NSDictionaries, and get replies to them. It's asynchronous, and multiple messages and replies can be in flight in both directions.
