It's still there; it's just been deprecated because Apple wants to push the NSCalendar and NSDateComponents classes due to their superior localization capabilities. Not everybody in the world uses the Gregorian calendar, after all. But it's currently still useful for one reason - it's the only built-in way to include a time zone as part of a date.
