Given that the underlying purpose is to authenticate the user to allow access to an encrypted database, would it make more sense for me to use the user's Mac OS X account credentials? Is there a way (I hesitate to use the phrase "best practice" again) for my program to authenticate the user that way?
Potentially, yes---though it depends where this database is stored, how it is accessed (e.g. access via a network connection might be handled differently to local access) and so on.
Solutions for this kind of thing include using Directory Services (or the new OpenDirectory framework), Authentication Services and so on.
Kind regards,
