Indeed it might - thanks for the pointer. It already helps, since it states that NSSocketPortNameServer is a wrapper for all the other Bonjour stuff, something that no Apple documentation took any trouble to mention, which is rather important, surely? Or are those more familiar with networking (I'm not) supposed to "just know" this?

It certainly makes using DO look like the more high-level and fruitful approach for my needs, so I will pursue that.
